Dandelion and Burdock - the newest addition to the Breckland Orchard family!

by Claire Martinsen on Sun 03rd Jul 2011 10:11

Here’s the newest addition to the Breckland Orchard family – Dandelion and Burdock!  I’ve launched  it as a Special Edition, to trial the flavour.

Dandelion and Burdock is a traditional British soft drink – and its history goes back to the 13th Century. Historically it was made from fermented Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) and Burdock(Arctium lappa) roots.  There have been several romantic stories concerning its origin. One story has it that  St Thomas Aquinas, after praying for inspiration for a full night, walked from his place of prayer straight into the countryside and, “trusting in God to provide”, concocted the drink from the first plants he encountered. It was this drink that aided his concentration when seeking to formulate his theological arguments.

However it came to be, it shares a historical origin with a number of drinks originally made from lightly fermented root extracts, such as Root Beer and Sasparilla!  In fact I always describe it as the British equivalent to Root Beer to anyone who hasn’t encountered it.

The rest of the Breckland Orchard range contains no artificial colours, and Dandelion and Burdock  is no different.  As a result its slightly lighter in hue than other brands – and I would say even more fabulous as a result.

Feedback from people who have tried it has been wonderful – lots of feedback such as ‘amazing’, ‘a real taste of my childhood’ and ‘that’s the best Dandelion I’ve ever tasted’.  It certainly evokes a sense of nostalgia and memories of peoples childhoods. I literally glow with pride to get such lovely comments!

I’ll continue testing the waters over the coming months……….you never know it could appear as a permanent addition to the range in  the future.
