Sir Alan Sugar...........tough, no messing straight talk....

by Claire Martinsen on Tue 01st Dec 2009 08:29

<img class="alignleft size-medium A last minute addition to the Destination Growth agenda a few weeks ago was a lunchtime session with none other than Sir/Lord Sugar [sorry but he’ll always be Sir Alan to me…].  An email came round with a first come first served opportunity to be in the invited audience……..your truly was one of the select few. He was every bit the same as the TV persona……….there were a few of the audience who got on his wrong side…and Ouch[!] you got a little insight as to what it must be like to be in the Boardroom on the Apprentice. He certainly takes no prisoners!

He was wonderfully down to earth though, gritty, real and honest to a fault.  He answered questions from the audience completely blind and gave his opinion on a number of topics from banks, to manufacturing, to the electronics industry. I loved his take on the current issues with lack of lending from the banks – entirely justifiable according to Sir A…he wouldn’t lend to most businesses himself if he were in the banks shoes.  He said that it was ridiculous how a few years ago you could just walk into a bank with an open collar, a bottle of Evian, a business plan and a dotcom in the name of your business and come out with £5m of funding.  The end of the crazy days were very welcome by Sir A.

Watching the Apprentice will never be the same…..Sir Alan, I salute you!
