Ode to the wonderful Leanne Castle

Everyone setting up or running a small business needs help along the way.  I’ve been incredibly lucky and fortunate with the amount of helping hands I’ve had since starting Breckland Orchard.

One of those was Leanne Castle of Menta, based in Suffolk.  Menta are a not-for-profit enterprise agency offering a mix of courses and one-to-one advice.  They run courses in Bury, Ipswich and Haverhill, as well as offering serviced offices. When I started up in 2009 there were a number of agencies in operation, and I can’t quite explain it but Menta just ‘felt’ right.

Menta have been a key ingredient in getting me and Breckland Orchard to the place we are now.  I’ve done many [if not most] of the courses on offer – ranging from start up bootcamp, marketing, to pr and media.  The courses are great…..run by people who are experts in their field.  I’ve come away from each and everyone having learned something new and having made some really good friends along the way [I even met my book-keeper at the starting a business event!].

I took advantage to the one-to-one mentoring on offer and was matched up with Leanne Castle.  She looked at my business plan and gave me some ‘tough love’  – which was absolutely what I needed.  When you start up its easy to share your plans with friends and family, who are by their very definition a little bit biased.  Running those plans past a complete stranger in a safe environment is a good process to go through….and that’s where Leanne came in! She challenged some of my numbers and assumptions, gave me some good pointers and still remains a great supporter.

Big thank you to Menta for all your help and guidance! Big thank you to Leanne for your wisdom and advice.
