Get Growing = Get Selling more like......

great british roadshowToday had to be one of the more surreal moments in my business life to date……I was a delegate at ‘The Great British Business Roadshow’ which is  a 10 date event the length and breadth of the UK over the coming months.  Today it came to Cambridge and promised to ‘a range of useful information designed to help them grow their businesses, as well as attending interactive workshops, networking with other local small businesses and learning more about local support available’.  Backed by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, it seemed a great opportunity to learn.

Get GrowingDisappointing doesn’t even sum it up……it was a stream of presentations by companies who wanted to affiliate themselves to small business and start ups who did nothing more than a thinly veiled sales pitch.  Did they really think small business owners are that green?

The speaker who broke this mould was the fantastically energetic Tamsin Fox-Davies of Constant Contact, who gave a great marketing presentation.  Her company was barely mentioned throughout her presentation, and she alone seemed to grasp the fact that business is all about relationships and establishing trust…….she spoke from the heart, and gave some great nuggets of information.  Of course once trust and rapport is established its much easier to sell services…..how come none of the other presenters ‘got’ that.  Came away with some good marketing insights, but that was disappointing as the day had promised so much more.

Have had to spend most of the evening catching up on work that I should have done during the day……I am sure this is not the kind of help that the Department for Business. Innovation and Skills meant when they put their backing to this event.
